What Gets You Up In The Morning?

Earlier today I had the opportunity to hear Bill Taylor of Fast Company speak to the attendees of the COSE Small Business Convention. He shared a great deal of interesting ideas around entrepreneurship today.

One of the things he mentioned was this – instead of thinking about what keeps you up at night as a business owner, think about what gets you up in the morning.

I found that fascinating. It puts a whole different spin on your outlook; it’s a much more positive and motivating idea. My coach trainer used to say that what we focus on expands. When you put these two things together you quickly realize why HOW we choose to look at things is so important to our future success.

If you think about what keeps you up at night you run the risk of compounding those worries. They could, and probably will, become worse before they get better. They could multiply. That’s because the emphasis and attention is on something negative in your business.

On the other hand, if you think about what gets you up in the morning, that’s energizing! If I think about why I do what I do I get excited all over again and can’t wait to do it. Now I am more likely to increase my opportunities to do what I love. Solely because I chose to think differently.

I don’t know about you, but I’d much rather think about positive, forward moving things, than spend time on negative. Now, I’m not saying you can ignore the things that aren’t working in your business. What I am saying is that if you focus on what is working it will make it easier to find solutions to the issues you face. Your mindset will be different; you’ll be more open to ideas.

Don’t believe me? That’s okay. Why not give it the 30 day try? You’ve got nothing to lose and potentially a lot to gain.
